In Part 2 of The Ultimate Guide To Ball Dress Shopping, we will help you shop for and pick the best and perfect ball gown with useful styling advice and tips.

This event is one of the most highly anticipated events in the social calendar. It is a night you will remember for many years to come being that it marks a milestone in your school years. In this perspective, it makes perfect sense that every girl wants to look their absolute best in finding the perfect ball dress.

In preparation for the big event, it would be best to give yourself plenty of time (up to 3 months) to think about, look and shop around for your evening gown. This will give you ample time to search and look amongst all the available formal gowns that you will consider to suit your style and budget.

Before you embark on this exciting journey of shopping around for that perfect ball gown, first determine what your body shape is. In doing this, it will help you pick the right fit for your body type to conceal the body parts you don’t like whilst highlighting and accentuating your best features.

Ball Gowns For Rectangular Shaped Body

Think Kate Middleton, Nicole Kidman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Hudson, Cameron Diaz and Jessica Biel.

A rectangular shape is characterized by a long and lean physique. You will want to create the illusion of more curves and a fuller figure. You can achieve this by choosing a sweetheart ball gown that emphasizes your bust and tapers down to a waist defining style.

This body shape is one of the easier body shapes to dress for and is often associated with an athletic or runway model type. A rectangular shape is distinguished by;

  • You have a well balanced upper and lower body; hips and shoulders are similar widths
  • You have no defined waist
  • Not a lot of curves
  • Your bust size is small or average
  • Small to flattish butt

Ball Gowns For Pear Shaped Body

Think Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera and Rihanna.

To flatter a pear shape body add the illusion of volume to the upper part of your body around your bust area whilst emphasizing your small waist and drawing attention away from the lower portion of your body to create a good balance between the top and bottom parts of your body. Choose a ball gown that has ruffles and detailing around the bust area and is more slim line once it hits the waist area and flows gently from the hips down.

The pear body shape (also sometimes referred to as a triangle) is more lower body dominant than upper body with;

  • Hips are larger than your bust
  • You have proportionately slim arms and shoulders
  • You first gain and carry your weight in the bottom half of your legs and butt, then tummy and then your upper body
  • The proportion of your bust and hips make your waist look small, making it one of your best assets!

Ball Gowns For Hourglass Shaped Body

Think Kim Kardshian, Khloe Kardashian, Liz Hurley, Sofia Vergara and Jessica Simpson.

This body shape looks fabulous with form fitting ball gowns so deep V neck and sweetheart necklines in combination with waist and hip hugging style will show off your lady curves perfectly.

The hourglass is the most sought after body shape! It is defined by;

  • Your bust and hips are proportionally balanced with one another
  • You have a defined waist and curves out to your hips
  • Your shoulders are nicely rounded with your hips
  • You have a rounded butt
  • You have shapely legs
  • Your upper and lower body are proportionally the same lengths that creates balance

Ball Gowns For Petite Shaped Body

Think Eva Longoria, Selena Gomez, Hayden Panettiere, Rachel Bilson and Nicole Ritchie.

Being of a petite shape means you want to amplify your curves  up a notch so look for ball dresses that have ruffles or texture on the bust area to create the illusion of a more ample chest. If you're not a fan of ruffles or detailing then an alternative is look for a sweetheart neckline that not only is universally flattering but looks great on a petite frame. Wear a push up bra underneath your dress to create some killer cleavage. Avoid any formal dresses that are too loose and flowing to avoid looking "lost" in the fabric. Opt for a formal dress that is fitted to create more curves in both your bust, waist and hips and height.

The petite body type is identified with a short frame and slender frame. You have a petite body if;

  • Your height is less than 160cm
  • You have a slender and lean frame
  • You have minimal curves in both your top and lower body

So now that you have identified your body shape, it's time to kick off and start the journey of shopping for your ball gown!
