Hang in there! You're on your way to almost finishing the preparation stages of your ball dress shopping journey. The hard yard of shopping for your school ball dress, shoes, clutch, jewelleries and accessories are done. Now onto the last part of the equation…getting your beauty and makeup look sorted.

Keep reading to find out the best school ball beauty tips and tricks to ensure you look your absolute best without the hassle and of course, shortcuts to make your life easier and stress free!

Beauty & Skincare

Beautiful makeup starts off with the canvas, meaning your face. To ensure a complete flawless makeup look, it is important to give your skin a little bit of TLC a few months prior by having a good diet of plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. If you have this covered, the cosmetic things you can do include getting into a cleansing routine a week before your school ball (if you have been doing this routine regularly, even better!). Why cleanse? This is one of the easiest and most inexpensive way to maintain a healthy looking and glowing skin. It is the building block to a healthy and vibrant skincare regime. Cleansing removes excess oils, dirt and impurities that have built up on your skin. By cleansing, you’re effectively removing these layer impurities that cause your skin to look dull. Cleansing also prepares your skin as a smooth canvas for makeup to go on better. You can also opt to follow up cleansing with a toner however this step is not necessarily required.

Exfoliation is another key in revealing radiant and beautiful skin.  You should aim to exfoliate twice a week with a gentle scrub to give you that gorgeous glow. Some of the benefits of exfoliation include;

  • Detoxifies the skin to slough away dead, dull skin cells
  • Brightens the complexion to reveal healthier skin
  • Improves the skin tone
  • Kills bacteria and helps prevent breakouts
  • Improves the quality of your skin and allows products such as moisturizers and makeup to go on more smooth and flawlessly

There are endless brands on the supermarket shelves of facial scrubs but you can seriously whip up a good homemade face scrub from the ingredients in your kitchen! Try a brown sugar honey face scrub which consists of only the ingredients as the name suggests. It is all natural, chemical free, smells divine and super cheap! Just mix together 1 tablespoon of honey with 1 tablespoon of brown or raw sugar and store in an airtight glass container.

How to use? Wash your face well and apply a small amount (about a teaspoon) of the scrub mixture onto your face and gently massage gently into your skin in a circular motion.

The night before your school ball you can also consider applying a face mask to really bring out the glow. It is a quick and easy beauty step that only involves a few minutes to apply and then you wait 10-15 minutes to let the mask work it’s magic. Commercial face masks are available in individual sachets and bottles. Or you can go the alternative route and do as you did for the facial scrub and make your own face mask. There are plenty of easy recipes available online which you can make for your DIY face mask. Depending on your skin type, you should pick the appropriate mask type to really reap the benefits. If you have dry skin, try this hydrating recipe consisting of half a very ripe avocado and a quarter cup of honey. Mash the avocado in a bowl and stir in the honey. Apply to your skin and leave on for 5-10 minute and rinse off with water. For the girls with oily skin and prone to blemishes, try this simple DIY face mask recipe. This recipe calls for one egg white, half a teaspoon lemon juice and one third teaspoon turmeric powder. Whisk the egg white in a small bowl until it turns frothy. Add in the lemon juice and turmeric powder and stir well. Apply the mixture to your face and allow it to sit on your skin for 10-15 minutes. This will allow for the properties to penetrate into the skin. When you feel the mask has completely dried, wash off with warm water and repeat with another wash to remove all residue traces of the mask. Pat your face dry and you will have glowing and super soft skin.

The egg white is rich in vitamins and proteins that help nourish the skin and also work to minimize oiliness on the face.

The lemon juice has natural antibacterial properties that are very effective at killing bacteria and reducing clogged pores. The turmeric powder has anti-inflammatory properties that help with inflamed acne and also absorbs excess oil to prevent shine and reduces the appearance of large pores.

Makeup

To complete your look perfectly, your makeup is an important element to get right. There are loads of different make up looks such as vintage inspired, bold, soft and natural or simple and elegant.

Read on to gather some expert tips on getting your makeup right and look smashing for your school ball.

Ball makeup tip #1: Pick only one facial feature to play up

The worst thing is to overdo your makeup and look somewhat like a clown rather than the glam princess you had envisioned. The simplest way to pick a makeup look is to decide whether you want to focus on your lips or your eyes. To create a perfect balance, you focus on one feature and downplay the rest. For example, if you decide on focusing on your eyes with a bold and dramatic eye makeup look, you should ensure your cheek and lip colour is very subtle. This works the same way if you wanted to go for a bold bright lip colour, ensure to go understated on the eye makeup.

Ball makeup tip #2: To match or to not?

A lot of girls would opt to match their eye shadow to their ball dress but there is no reason to not do so. If you aren't a fan of coloured eye shadow or find this look too overdone, you can always pick a neutral shade such as browns, taupes, beiges, golds that flatter every skin tone.

Ball makeup tip #3: Pick the right foundation base and colour

If you are getting your ball makeup done by a professional, you're pretty much set to go. However if you decide to do your own makeup, it is important to get the basis of the makeup routine right.

One of the biggest and common makeup mistakes is not choosing the right foundation colour. This can be pretty disastrous.  The perfect foundation colour should blend seamlessly into your skin when applied. Apply a small amount to your chin and jaw line and blend in well. If the colour "disappears" then you have found a good colour match. You should also consider choosing the right foundation for your skin type. For example, if you have dry skin, pick a foundation that offers hydrating benefits. You don't want your foundation to look flaky when it doesn't adhere to your dry skin! For the girls with oilier skin, pick a foundation that mattifies and have oil absorbing properties to avoid looking shinier than the disco ball lights!

Another very important tip is to ensure the moisturizer and foundation you will be wearing for your school ball does not contain SPF. Products with SPF rating have active ingredients such as titanium dioxide that will give off a white sheen and make light bounce off with photography flash. This will make you appear a few shades lighter, if not ghostly white!

Ball makeup tip #4: Prime your skin

They key to helping your makeup last throughout the evening is to prepare by skin by applying a primer to your skin prior to foundation. The primer works to smooth out fine lines and pores and create a smooth canvas for your makeup application. You can also prime your eyes to get more staying power for your eye shadow.

Ball makeup tip #5: Start your makeup preparation early

Avoid any unexpected mini makeup disasters by allowing ample time to apply your makeup. While you may not experience anything drastic but a little bit of extra time will give you the opportunities to fix up any smudges or start over if necessary.

Ball makeup tip #6: Prepare your face and your evening clutch bag

If you have oily skin, be prepared at the stage of putting on your makeup and also during your school ball. After you have applied your foundation, dust a light layer of translucent powder over your entire face. This will help to keep the oiliness at bay for a few hours. Keep a stash of blotting paper or pressed powder in your evening clutch for touch ups throughout the night.
